Civil War

I'm outlining my work sample unit on the Civil War.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  Is there a specific lesson you remember, an activity you enjoyed, or know a story I should tell?

  1. William Sherman used the "scorched earth" approach, ordering his troops to burn crops, kill livestock, consume supplies, and destroy civilian infrastructure along their path. This was the turning point in the war. So, when you start a war, keep in mind what it takes to finish it, and only start it if you are ready to finish.

  2. Ken Burns did one of his videos on the Civil War and there is supposed to be an audio clip of the "rebel yell;" the yell they would make when entering battle. I haven't heard it, but I've been told by a couple people it's powerful, especially with an understanding of the background.

Apparently he had a bunch of civil war veterans all together and one of the former Confederate soldiers did the yell while on tape. Just a little snippet, but it's something!

  3. A corollary to Anonymous' comment, it would be a great tie-in to other conflicts where "scorched earth" was employed as a tactic and taking a look at if it was a successful policy.
